What you’ll learn
Start with why you want to invest and when you will need the money.
Before investing, ask yourself what you want to achieve and when you will need the money. If you are unsure, start with a learning goal, such as spending four weeks understanding stocks and funds before deciding whether to invest.
There are two separate questions: “How would I feel about a loss?” and “What would a loss do to my everyday life?” Even if falling prices do not worry you, the money may still be needed for rent, essentials, or emergencies.
See it in an example
Imagine that you have money set aside for next month’s rent. Even shares in a familiar company can fall during that month. When the rent is due, you might have to sell at a loss. Being comfortable with a price decline does not make that money available to risk.
Use what you just learned to answer a question
Choose the answer you think fits and write a short reason in your own words. Then submit to see the answer and explanation and check your understanding.
Try this for yourself
Write down why you want to learn about investing, what the money is for, and when you might first need it. You can keep learning while you work out the answers.
